Q: Do I need a fishing license?
A: Yes, starting at age 17. For general license questions, and to purchase, please call TPWD Headquarters in Austin at (800) 792-1112 or (512) 389-4800. Staff is available to help answer questions Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, Central Standard Time. You may also purchase a license online at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/licenses/online_sales/index.phtml. Action Angler does not sell fishing licenses.
Q: Where do I go to fish on the Guadalupe River?
A: We have provided a map to all the access points on the lower Guadalupe River. Anglers looking to fish from the river bank should consider Huaco Springs, Lazy L&L, Rio Raft, and Canyon Dam locations. Kayak shuttles and rentals are offered by Rio Raft (http://rioraft.com/index.php). Consider hiring a guide. If you plan to fish the Guadalupe River often, consider joining the Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited Lease Program (http://www.grtu.org/). The GRTU Lease Program offers its members many access points along the Guadalupe River without day fees, and stocks trophy trout. All the property that borders the Guadalupe River is privately owned. The river and river bottom is public. No parking is allowed anywhere on the shoulders of River Rd.
Q: How many fish can I keep?
A: Action Angler does not encourage that any fish is kept. No fish in the river = No Action Angler. Check the current state regulations specific to the lower Guadalupe River. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/action/fishregs2.php?water=1244
Q: What flies do I use?
A: We have provided a hatch chart, and a tandem nymph rig diagram. The Guadalupe River predominately fishes subsurface. There is occasional surface activity for dries. Action Angler has the most extensive fly selection in the entire hill country specific for Guadalupe trout fishing. Western trout stream patterns, similar to the ones used on the San Juan, are used on the Guadalupe. Consider hiring a guide.
Q: What are the normal flows on the Guadalupe River?
A: In the 10 years Action Angler has been in business, we have never seen “normal” flows. The flows are very low, or very high. Rarely do we see the 200 cfs that we all hope for.
