The Texas Holdover Tournament

            On The Guadalupe River


Guadalupe River fly fishing guides are teaming up with fly anglers from around Texas to kick off the 2011 Guadalupe River trout fishing season with a 2-day fly fishing tournament. The tournament was founded and organized by the guides to raise funds for the GRTU Fisheries Fund (stocking and TroutFest), the GRTU Legal Defense Fund, and to support Texas Parks and Wildlife in maintaining sustainable fisheries.

Tournament Entry: Entry fee is $700 per team of 2 anglers for both days, $350 per team of 2 anglers for one day.  Entry fees directly benefit the GRTU Fisheries Fund and the GRTU Legal Defense Fund.  To enter, contact Chris Jackson (contact info below).

Scoring Per Team: Largest fish equals 1 point per inch plus the following; Trout = 4, Bass = 3, Perch = 2, Catfish, Gar, Carp = 1. Scores are cumulative per team.

Schedule: Each day begins at 7am at headquarters: Action Angler, 9751 River Road in New Braunfels (third crossing).  Return to headquarters at 5:30pm for digital picture submission and prizes.

Texas Holdover Entry Form

1st Annual Texas Holdover Tournament

October 27-28, 2012

This is an opportunity for all of you Texas fly anglers to kick off the trout season for a 2 day fly fishing tournament on the Guadalupe River. The Texas Holdover Tournament is a Guadalupe River guides’ event designed to raise money for the GRTU fisheries (stocking fund) and legal defense fund, and document the fishing activity for TXPW. Please read the details carefully before submitting an entry. The proceeds from this weekend will go to the GRTU fisheries (stocking fund) and legal defense funds.

· 2 anglers per team

· Both anglers allowed to fish at the same time.

· 6 - 8 teams

· Composite score for 2 days.

· There will be 3 - 4 beats. 2 teams per beat with start times separated by 30 minutes. Any team drawing a lower beat the first day automatically gets a higher beat the second day.

· Entry fee $700.00 per team for 2 days, or $350 per team for a single day. Includes food, prizes, swag, and tax deductable donation.

· Each afternoon we will gather at 5:30pm to document results for the day, and hand out prizes.

· Each anglers’ largest fish counts as a point per inch. Subsequent fish are Trout = 4, Bass = 3, Perch = 2, Catfish/Gar/Carp = 1. Team scores will be added together to determine Champion. No cut. If one of the anglers on the team should not land a fish there will be a 0 on that side of the scoring column.

· Catch and release, 2 fly rig max with barbless hooks, fish must be netted to count. Trout are to remain in the water at all times.

· Each team must have a measuring tape, net, and digital camera to document largest fish, and all trout. Each team will also need to bring rods, and flies.

· Each day a prize will be given away to the largest fish, as well as to the winning team.

· To be held rain or shine, drought or flood.

· No refunds

· First come first serve.

· Please remember gratuity for your guide each day. They are donating 2 days of their time for this event, and typically charge $395 per day.

River Bass 101

CGS and Action Angler are partnering for a half day group instruction on the Guadalupe River. This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of fly casting and fishing for bass in the Texas Hill Country.

In this class, you will learn about:

      • Overhead and false casting.
      • Double Haul
      • Precise placement of flies to structure
      • Reading Structure.
      • Effective flies for bass fishing in the Texas Hill Country
      • Knots for bass fishing
      • Rigging for bass
      • WE WILL FISH!

This is a small class setting that will allow for individualized instruction as well as group interaction. In the past, we have found this to be an effective and economical way to learn about fishing for rainbow trout on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam.

      • Date: October 29, 2011
      • Time: 9am to 1pm

      • Class Size: Maximum of 6 people, preregistration is required
      • Cost: $100/ person

All participants will qualify for discounts on the following items:

      • $50 off a full day Float trip with either CGS or AA.

This class is offered rain-or-shine. If you have to cancel, please contact CGS or Action Angler 7 or more days prior to the class for a full refund. If it is within 7 days of the class and we are able to fill the spot with another participant you will be issued a full refund. If you cancel within 7 days of the class and we are unable to fill the spot you will be given the option to participate in the next class or a 50% refund of your tuition.

Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country by Kayak

Castell Guide Service, Action Angler & Diablo Paddlesports are partnering for a full day group instruction on the Colorado River downstream of Austin.  This class is intended for intermediate anglers who want to improve their on-the-water fishing skills for bass and other warm water species while utilizing one of the most stable and innovative kayak platforms on the market today.

 

In this class, you will learn about:

 

      • Intermediate casting skills for bass with both streamers & poppers.
      • Rigging your kayak for a day (or longer) on the water.
      • Safely navigating rivers by kayak.
      • How to effectively fish from a kayak.
      • Targeting bass & other warm water species on the rivers of the Texas Hill Country.
      • We will float from Little Webberville Park to Big Webberville Park (approximately 5 miles)
      • All kayaks will be provided by Diablo Paddlesports!

 

This is a small class setting that will allow for individualized instruction as well as group interaction. In the past, we have found this to be an effective and economical way to learn about fishing for rainbow trout on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam.
